The North and South Nodes of the Moon are often highlighted in karmic astrology, but they’re just as powerful when approached from a psychological and humanistic perspective.
You don’t need to believe in past lives to work with the lunar nodes. In my client sessions, I rarely bring up reincarnation—this lifetime already has plenty of challenges! Still, the Nodes are deeply useful: they show recurring life patterns and point toward the kind of growth that can make your story feel more whole.
My own view is open—I see value in both karmic and psychological interpretations. But you can integrate the Nodes entirely through what has actually happened in your life. They tell the story of both where you’ve been and where you’re invited to grow.
In this article, I’ll share how I interpret the North and South Nodes from a psychological lens, with occasional nods to the past-life perspective. Whether or not you believe in reincarnation, you’ll find ways to integrate their meaning into your own chart and life story.
South Node: Resources & Old Patterns
In karmic astrology, the South Node is often linked with past-life identities. It represents familiar patterns you carry into this lifetime. For example, if your South Node is connected with Aries or Mars, you might feel as though conflict is simply a natural part of life—almost as if you’ve been a soldier before.
This could give you a valuable resource: the courage to stand up for yourself and take decisive action. But it might also bring challenges, such as a tendency to stir up conflict even when cooperation would serve you better. The South Node shows both the strengths you can rely on and the old habits you may need to release.
From a psychological standpoint, the same placement could point to growing up in an environment where raised voices and arguments were the norm. If so, you might carry that “default to conflict” style into your adult relationships.
The karmic and psychological perspectives don’t have to contradict each other. It may be that you were a soldier in a past life, and that your family replayed similar combative patterns in this lifetime. In that way, both viewpoints can deepen our understanding of the South Node.
North Node: Energizing Challenge
The North Node acts as a balancing remedy for the South Node. It points toward the direction of growth that will most benefit you in this lifetime.
Continuing our earlier example: if your South Node is in Aries, your North Node will be in Libra. Learning to cooperate, compromise, and consider others’ perspectives naturally complements the Aries qualities of courage and decisive action.
Of course, changing old habits isn’t easy. South Node patterns are reflexive, almost automatic. If you grew up believing that conflict was necessary for survival, then sitting down to talk things through might feel completely foreign. North Node energies often feel awkward and unfamiliar at first.
But here’s the paradox: the more you lean into your North Node, the more energized you feel. Following old South Node patterns can leave you stagnant, while pursuing the North Node offers the excitement of learning something new. That sense of growth is deeply rewarding.
Returning to our Aries–Libra example: once a person with an Aries South Node learns to cooperate and value other viewpoints, they can become a truly effective leader—someone who blends courage and decisiveness with fairness and diplomacy.
With this foundation in place, let’s explore what each sign means on the North and South Nodes. If you also have a planet conjunct one of the Nodes, you can look at the section for the sign that planet rules. For example, if Mars is conjunct your South Node, the Aries South Node section will give you additional insight.
Aries North Node & Libra South Node
(also relevant for: Mars on the North Node, or Venus on the South Node)
With Libra or Venus on the South Node, you have a natural gift for sensing what others need. You often know how to smooth things over before conflict even arises—a born peacemaker. This is a valuable skill, but the South Node suggests you may have grown too comfortable in this role.
If your instinct is always to think of others first, you may find yourself slipping into people-pleasing. Over time, others might take your helpfulness for granted and come to expect you to put their needs ahead of your own—whether in family life, friendships, or at work.
Enter Aries North Node. In this lifetime, your growth comes from learning to put yourself first and act to satisfy your own needs. That old inner voice may whisper, “It’s wrong to be selfish.” But in truth, a little enlightened selfishness is exactly what restores balance. By honoring your own desires, you’ll find that others respect and appreciate you more—and you’ll finally have space to meet your own needs.
As you grow in independence and courageous self-assertion, you’ll naturally complement your existing gift for creating peace. The difference is that now, you’re learning to create harmony on your own terms—without sacrificing yourself in the process.
Taurus North Node & Scorpio South Node
(also relevant for: Venus on the North Node, or Pluto on the South Node)
With Scorpio or Pluto on the South Node, there’s often a deep-rooted pattern of feeling unsafe or threatened with loss. Whether in a past life or earlier in this one, you may have had to fight with others for power, control, or resources.
Living through struggle gave you valuable tools: a sharp awareness of danger, resilience in crisis, and an instinctive insight into other people’s motives. These are powerful skills for navigating life—but what if you still feel unsafe, even when the crisis has passed?
Enter Taurus North Node. Your growth comes from establishing a solid foundation in two ways: material security—having enough stability in the physical world, and emotional security—developing a steady sense of self-worth.
As you cultivate these foundations, you begin to feel safe enough to exhale, to relax, to settle into yourself. That sense of calm stillness is the true gift of walking the Taurus North Node path.
Gemini North Node & Sagittarius South Node
(also relevant for: Mercury on the North Node, or Jupiter on the South Node)
With Sagittarius or Jupiter on the South Node, you carry a natural gift of faith and optimism. Even without following an organized religion, you may feel protected—or at least lucky.
Your strong belief in yourself is a strength, but it can also tip into insisting on your own viewpoint. At times, this conviction may show up as a tendency to think you’re “right,” even when the facts don’t fully support your position.
Enter Gemini North Node. Your growth in this lifetime comes from learning to stay curious—open to new information, fresh perspectives, and alternative ways of seeing reality. It means listening more, asking questions, and being willing to adjust your worldview.
As you embrace this Gemini path, your natural Sagittarian conviction becomes even more powerful—because it’s informed by current knowledge. You’ll be able to share your evolving understanding with others in a way that’s persuasive, flexible, and deeply relevant.
Cancer North Node & Capricorn South Node
(also relevant for: Moon on the North Node, or Saturn on the South Node)
With Capricorn or Saturn on the South Node, you may have grown up with a strong sense of duty and self-control. In a past life—or even early in this one—you may have been shaped by hard work that demanded discipline and perseverance.
These qualities are valuable resources, but they often come with a cost: self-denial and emotional suppression. An excessive focus on responsibility can leave you feeling numb, cut off from your emotions. Taken to extremes, this pattern may lead to depression or unhealthy coping mechanisms.
Enter Cancer North Node. In this lifetime, your growth comes from learning to pay attention to your feelings. At first, this may feel like weakness—but in truth, it’s strength. By acknowledging and embracing your softer, more vulnerable emotions, you begin to restore balance.
As you care for yourself more gently—resting when needed, nurturing your inner world—you’ll rediscover joy and happiness. Ultimately, this allows you to enjoy the fruits of your labor, instead of simply working hard without fulfillment.
Leo North Node & Aquarius South Node
(also relevant for: Sun on the North Node, or Uranus on the South Node)
With Aquarius or Uranus on the South Node, your past may have involved feeling different from others — maybe on the margins of society, or as if you were looking at life from the outside in. Some unusual circumstances may have shaped your worldview, giving you a natural tendency to question what everyone else takes for granted.
This outsider’s perspective has been a gift. It gave you freedom from social expectations and a sense of your own originality, even brilliance. But the challenge comes when detachment turns into alienation. It can be hard to connect deeply with others if you always feel separate or misunderstood. How do you let others in when you’re so used to standing apart?
Enter Leo North Node. In this lifetime, your growth lies in stepping out of the margins and moving into the spotlight through authentic, creative self-expression. Rather than watching from the sidelines, you’re invited to step onto center stage.
The key is vulnerability. Instead of hiding behind cool detachment, defensive logic, or a polished front, your task is to show your real self — emotions, quirks, and all.
Whether through humor, art, or simple honesty, people will finally get to see how interesting you are—if you have the courage to let yourself be seen and heard. That’s when your unique brilliance shines, and others can appreciate you for being exactly who you are.
Virgo North Node & Pisces South Node
(also relevant for: Mercury on the North Node, or Neptune on the South Node)
With Pisces or Neptune on the South Node, you come into this life with a natural gift of compassion. In the past, you may have walked alongside those who suffered, offering comfort through your presence. Within you there is an openness and intuitive awareness of the spiritual and the unseen.
Your sensitivity makes you receptive to inspiration and creativity — but it can also leave you floating in daydreams. You naturally want to see the best in people, which is wonderful, yet it can sometimes make you vulnerable to those who might take advantage of your generosity.
Enter Virgo North Node. In this lifetime, your growth comes through learning the art of discernment. Instead of only focusing on what’s good in others, you’re called to notice the red flags and inconsistencies too. Apply the same practicality to your own dreams: gather the skills, tools, and knowledge you need to make those visions real.
As you grow in grounded wisdom and practical skill, your natural compassion and creativity won’t be lost — they’ll actually become stronger. By combining your big, imaginative heart with real-world know-how, you’ll turn your ideals into something tangible, meaningful, and lasting.
Libra North Node & Aries South Node
(also relevant for: Venus on the North Node, or Mars on the South Node)
With Aries or Mars on the South Node, you were born with a fiercely independent streak. Your past may have involved relying on your own strength to survive or succeed—almost as if no one was there to help, so you had no choice but to push forward on your own.
This has given you a deep trust in your ability to meet challenges head-on, making you courageous and resourceful. Yet, the same self-reliance can leave you isolated—a lone wolf who hesitates to ask for help, even when collaboration could open new doors.
Enter Libra North Node. In this lifetime, your growth comes from learning to lean on others and discovering the art of partnership. Instead of competing for the prize, you’re here to practice a win–win philosophy—building relationships based on mutual benefit.
As you grow into Libra’s energy, your world broadens. Working with others allows you to reach goals far larger than you could accomplish alone. And with your natural Aries confidence, your leadership shines even brighter when tempered with empathy and social grace.
Scorpio North Node & Taurus South Node
(also relevant for: Pluto on the North Node, or Venus on the South Node)
With Taurus or Venus on the South Node, you carry an instinctive desire to create order and stability. Perhaps in past lives—or earlier in this one—you had to work hard just to survive, making material security a central focus. Fear of loss may still echo in your subconscious, pushing you to hold on tightly to what you’ve earned.
This gives you valuable skills in building resources and creating comfort. But the same instinct can also leave you stuck, clinging to possessions, relationships, or routines long past their expiration date.
Enter Scorpio North Node. In this lifetime, your growth comes from learning to let go of what no longer serves you. That might mean literally clearing out belongings, or more symbolically releasing old habits and attachments that don’t reflect who you are becoming.
As you practice letting go, you’ll discover the hidden gift of Scorpio: transformation. By creating space, you invite in new energy, new people, and new experiences that nourish your growth. Over time, fear of loss gives way to trust in life’s cycles—realizing that every ending makes room for a powerful new beginning.
Sagittarius North Node & Gemini South Node
(also relevant for: Jupiter on the North Node, or Mercury on the South Node)
With Gemini or Mercury on the South Node, you carry the gift of an inquisitive mind and a talent for communication. In the past, you may have relied heavily on your ability to persuade, charm, or talk your way into opportunities.
Your quick wit and conversational skills are real strengths. But over time, you may notice how easily words can be twisted to serve an agenda. Everyone has their own angle, and not everything you hear is true—or spoken with the best of intentions. Without a guiding framework, your talents risk being scattered or misdirected.
Enter Sagittarius North Node. In this lifetime, your growth comes from developing a clear sense of truth and a personal moral compass. Instead of chasing the next clever idea or quick win, you’re called to ask bigger questions: Why am I here? What is my purpose?
This search for meaning can take many forms—studying philosophy, learning from wise teachers, traveling, or immersing yourself in new cultures and perspectives. Along the way, you’ll discover not just information, but wisdom. And when you begin sharing your insights, your words carry the weight of conviction and inspire others, not just entertain them.
Capricorn North Node & Cancer South Node
(also relevant for: Saturn on the North Node, or Moon on the South Node)
With Cancer or the Moon on the South Node, you came into this life with a natural gift for empathy and a strong desire for emotional security through family or close bonds. Your instinct is to nurture and care for others, offering warmth and support.
While these are beautiful qualities, they can also become limiting if you retreat too deeply into the comfort of family ties. Sometimes family patterns—even loving ones—can keep you from venturing out into the wider world. And if the bonds are toxic, they can derail you from living your own life entirely.
Enter Capricorn North Node. In this lifetime, your growth comes from choosing your own goals and steadily working toward them—even if that means standing on your own at times. Instead of letting others decide your path, you’re called to set your own direction and climb your own mountain.
As you pursue your ambitions, you develop independence and self-discipline. Paradoxically, this makes your natural empathy even more powerful: when expressed in a professional or leadership setting, it becomes a gift to your community. Over time, you create your own “family”—but this time, it’s on your terms, built from the life you’ve chosen.
Aquarius North Node & Leo South Node
(also relevant for: Uranus on the North Node, or Sun on the South Node)
With Leo or the Sun on the South Node, you carry the gift of strong will and natural confidence. In a past life, you may have been someone of significance within a community—perhaps a leader, a performer, or a person whose presence naturally drew attention.
While these are powerful resources, they can backfire if you become too accustomed to being the most important person in the room. When perspective turns overly self-centered, it can blind you to the needs of others, leaving you feeling alienated rather than truly appreciated.
Enter Aquarius North Node. In this lifetime, your growth comes from learning to step back and see things objectively. By detaching from your own perspective, you can recognize what is genuinely needed by others in the moment—instead of amplifying unnecessary drama.
As you gradually widen your perspective, you begin to notice authentic needs in the world that are calling for your energy. Offering your gifts in service of the collective not only brings greater fulfillment, but also provides abundant opportunities to exercise your natural talent for leadership.
Pisces North Node & Virgo South Node
(also relevant for: Mercury on the North Node, or Neptune on the South Node)
With Virgo or Mercury on the South Node, you arrive in this life with a sharp mind and pragmatic orientation. You may have a natural capacity for detail, precision, and mastery of technique—qualities that make you a quick and capable learner.
While the mind is your greatest asset, relying on it too heavily can become a limitation. An overactive intellect is prone to worry, nervous tension, and the pursuit of impossible perfection. Left unchecked, this can manifest as a hyper-critical attitude toward yourself or others.
Enter Pisces North Node. In this lifetime, your growth comes from learning to trust intuition over analysis, and to live more fully in the present moment. You’re likely to discover new perspectives through spirituality, creativity, and other right-brain pursuits.
As you learn to let go of overthinking and relax into the moment, your intuition awakens—and with it, a deeper faith in life. From this place of inspiration, your mental gifts no longer bind you; instead, they blossom into creative tools that serve both you and others.
In Closing: Nodes and Personal Growth
Every symbol in astrology carries both positive and challenging potentials. With the South Node, you can recognize the gifts and resources you bring from the past, as well as the familiar patterns you may need to outgrow. The North Node points to the direction of growth. Moving toward it often involves trial and error, but the effort brings energy, renewal, and a sense of reward.
When you integrate the North and South Nodes with the rest of your horoscope, the story of your life path comes into sharper focus.
How have you experienced your North and South Nodes? I’d love to hear your reflections in the comments below.

Hi dear friend Hiroki,
I’m extremely into learning about karmic lessons, reincarnation, and past life issues at the moment so that the very liberating psychological and humanistic perspective hasn’t occured to me yet. It gives one the feeling of lightness back – that’s why I’m grateful for this beautiful article and would like to say Arigato to you!
My South Node is in Sag 24°20′ in conjunction with my natal Neptune (r) 27°35′ in the second house (which has Jupiter (r) 2°22′ on the cusp); my North Node is in conjunction with Mercury 25°27′ in Gem, 8th house. I have a kite pattern in my chart (Pluto in Lib 26°43’/Saturn in Lib 27°’43 trining with the Moon in Aqua 23°43′) – in tandem with the Nodes, Neptune is the focal point and Mercury the tail point.
I’m just two and a half years into learning astrology so I still have much to explore but I can say that this pattern fascinated me from the very first moment I looked up my birth chart.
Sending heartfelt greetings from Germany to Japan,
Jasmin
Hi Jasmin, thank you for the kind words! So glad to hear the article helped to lighten the whole subject of lunar nodes and past life theory. Neptune South Node and Mercury North Node has a similar feel to Pisces-Virgo polarity, and definitely feels like an important theme for your birth chart.
Much appreciated!
