Fate or Free Will?
The age-old question remains: does our birth chart dictate a predetermined fate, or does free will shape our life’s outcomes—and if so, to what extent?
As a humanistic astrologer, I emphasize the power of free will more than traditionally inclined astrologers. Unlike those who may immediately associate certain placements, such as challenging aspects from Saturn or other so-called “malefics,” with negative outcomes, I view them as opportunities for growth and transformation.
If you study the charts of successful individuals, you’ll often find placements traditionally labeled as “afflictions.” However, these tensions often fuel their drive to overcome challenges and achieve greatness.
Does this mean life is entirely shaped by free will and how we channel planetary energies? Not so fast. Before embracing this perspective fully, it’s worth questioning whether our “will” is truly free.
The Role of the Unconscious
Modern psychology has taught us about the profound influence of the unconscious on our decisions. Memories, traumas, and experiences from our past shape our fears, dreams, and behaviors—often steering us without our awareness.
For example, if you grew up in a home with dysfunctional relationship dynamics, you might notice similar patterns recurring in your adult relationships, almost as if they were predestined.
What we think of as free will is not entirely free. Unconscious memories and motivations influence everything from the work we gravitate toward to the people we find attractive.
Carl Jung famously said, “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” In this sense, the challenging aspects in your natal chart often point to unconscious tendencies that can shape your life’s trajectory—unless you bring them to light.
Horoscope Patterns and the Unconscious
Take, for example, a childhood pattern of abandonment. This experience might unconsciously lead you to gravitate toward emotionally or physically unavailable partners in adulthood. Such tendencies can appear in your horoscope as Neptune in hard aspect to your Moon, Venus or near the IC.
This doesn’t mean these Neptunian signatures doom you to a life of abandonment. However, if you experienced emotional or physical distance from a parent during childhood, your unconscious might compel you to “fix” this dynamic by choosing partners with similar qualities to your parent.
Recognizing a repeating pattern—such as abandonment—gives you the opportunity to trace it back to its origin. The root issue is often an unresolved emotional wound from childhood. By acknowledging and working through this wound, you can break free from the cycle.
Through this process of psychological integration and emotional healing, the Neptune aspect in your chart can take on new and more empowering expressions. Instead of manifesting as abandonment, it might guide you toward creative endeavors or acts of compassion that honor your heightened sensitivity.
The Freedom in Awareness
Free will emerges through self-awareness. The more conscious you are of the fears, motivations, and patterns within your psyche, the freer you become to direct your life intentionally. By understanding and integrating the energies of your natal chart, you gain the power to shape your destiny.

Fabulous content ! I feel Hiroki is a great Astrologer !
Thank you Rosemary! Glad you enjoyed the article :)
What I love about your articles is how clearly you articulate that the planets will do what their nature impels them to do, but that consciousness draws out their positive expressions to utilize in living a better life. So much of my focus with clients centers on helping them become aware of all the planets have to offer. How, within a “negative” expression, lies the antidote; that both positive and negative expressions harbor their opposites. In the end, it’s about helping clients understand their agency. My own feeling is that “fate” is what happens when we don’t make a decision; destiny is what happens when we do. The change happens at those moments of insight that change forever the way a client views and works with their resources. Thanks again, Hiroki, for a well articulated concept!
Hi Jill, very well said!! Thank you for sharing your insight as well.
Perfect timing! Spending time with family is something I look forward to yet it never fails to bring up the past and give me the opportunity to work with my chart and do some healing work. That big t-square surfaces , again!
Astrology is so beneficial! Love your perspective and understanding. Thank you for sharing!
Happy holidays,
Karen
Thank you Karen! Wishing you a happy holiday season.
Interesting take, there is this evolutionary astrologer that I really enjoy his books called Jeffrey Green and he talks about one third of the people transcending their fate and are able to rewrite their destiny while the other third go with the flow with their initial natal chart. I think this co-aligns with your philosophy here about whether a person is has developed an awakened subconscious in order to transcend it or not from the first place.
Hi Fatma, Jeff Green is very special! His take is more spiritual in nature, but I think along the spiritual journey, we often get an opportunity to face our past and release them.
Dear Hiroki!
Enjoyed reading your article and agreeing totally with your thesis.
