Gemini – Virgo Syndrome: Therapeutic Balancing of Hyperactive Mercury

Intellect reigns supreme within the Mercury ruled signs of Gemini and Virgo. If an emphasis is placed on these signs, and especially if planets of emotions such as Moon and Venus are found within these signs, one may be able to talk about his/her emotions without being able to feel them.

The planetary patterns that would exacerbate this tendency would be hard aspect from Saturn or Uranus to Moon, Mercury or Venus. This is because Saturn naturally acts to suppress emotions, and Uranus tends to intensify the mental process.

If we see a strong accentuation of Gemini and/or Virgo and then added emphasis from Saturn and Uranus, this could suggest a real imbalance in terms of intellect dominating over feelings, and could lead to anxiety, nervous tension, and even neurosis. Being in touch with bodily emotions allow us to release tension, but this is not possible if we perpetually “live in our head,” so to speak.

This has been corroborated in private cases, where the client may be very articulate about her feelings, but told me “I don’t believe these feelings are real.”

Therapeutic Balancing

There are several ways for these people to start accessing their feelings; the aim here is to restore emotional/mental equilibrium, release emotional tension, and increase the capacity to experience joy.

1) Access to Body: feel each part of the body. Starting with the muscles of your feet, feel and breathe with each part, as you relax them one by one. Work your way up the leg, torso, hands and arms, neck, face, and your head. Keep breathing out the tension. This is deeply relaxing, and since emotions gets stored in the body, this kind of exercise allows you to feel and release them.

In the case of a chronically nervous, tense person, the body may feel so tight as to make it impossible to feel certain parts of the body. This would necessitate seeking help from body workers such as massage therapists, chiropractors, acupuncture/acupressure therapist, Feldenkrais practitioner, etc, to start releasing the stored tension from the body.

2) Access to Feelings: pay attention to the sound of music, view of nature, smell of flower or taste of food. See if you can really appreciate it. When intellect are working overtime to suppress feelings, the capacity to enjoy one’s senses tends to atrophy, and a dry desert-like perception remains. How barren must such life be.

Taking a walk in nature is one of the best way to do both of these things, provided you pay attention to your body, and/or the fresh air and beauty of nature around you.

These seem to be such basic activities, that they may seem unimportant, but I remember a time when I couldn’t enjoy these things very much, being too caught up in my intellectual goals. Being prisoners of our own mind is not the way to live. Joy is easy to find when mind and emotions are in harmony.
