Natal Venus and Your Relationship Effectiveness

In your natal chart, Venus shows how you need to relate to others in order to be most effective.

Venus is the magnet that attracts others to us and makes them want to stay in a relationship with us.  In business, friendship or romance,  expressing the qualities suggested by your natal Venus may help you attract (and keep) better relationships.

Elements of Your Venus Sign: Necessary Qualities in a Relationship
Consider the element of your natal Venus sign as shown below.  Are you currently expressing the qualities associated with your natal Venus?

Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): Enthusiasm, Confidence, Humor, Faith

Air (Libra, Aquarius, Gemini): Intelligence, Knowledge, Communication, Interest in Others, Diplomacy

Earth (Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo): Getting things done together, doing things for others, giving gifts, making practical, helpful improvements

Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): Compassion, Caring, Nurturing, Empathy

Example and Application: Barack Obama’s Venus
When Sun and Venus occupy different signs, expressing the Venus’ quality may not come naturally to you.  However, successfully integrating & expressing the Venus energy is vital to your relationship effectiveness.

Consider President Obama’s horoscope with Leo Sun, Gemini Moon, and Cancer Venus.  For sure he had shown all the confidence and the theatrical energy of Leo Sun, as well as the wit and eloquence of the communicative Gemini Moon.

However, arguably, what really made him so popular with the public was the depth of empathy and caring he was able to convey through his speech: in other words, his Venus in Cancer (on Aries Point, no less) gave the sense “I really feel and care about you.”

We could say that this watery energy of empathy gave him the necessary softness required to win American public’s support, as well as the Nobel Peace Prize.  If he did not utilize his Venus’ energy, he may have ended up sounding clever and flashy but not particularly likable.

More Examples of Sun and Venus in Different Elements
If you have the Sun in a Water sign but have your Venus in a Fire sign, it may prove to be a lot more effective if you spoke up more, projecting more confidence and enthusiasm than you may naturally feel.  To stay introverted (as Water sign Sun tends to do) and sensitive all the time would not be the best strategy in this case.

If you have a Sun in an Air sign but have your Venus in an Earth sign, you may want to consciously explore ways of giving tangible evidence of your love to others, rather than just talk about it all the time.

On the other hand if you have a reverse combination (Earth Sun and Air Venus), then you may need to work on verbalizing your love by saying things like “I love you” on a more regular basis, rather than assuming that being a good provider is enough.

Conclusion: What Does Your Natal Venus Say?
This exploration does not have to end with analyzing the natal Venus’ sign.  The sign and aspects (and even the house position) of Venus give helpful insights on how best we can relate with others.

What does your Venus say about how you can relate with others in order to be effective?  Please feel free to share your experience and/or questions through emails or comments.

  1. Hi Hiroki – My Venus is in Libra and is conjunct both my North Node and Sun (also in Libra). I’m at my best when I work cooperatively with others, using diplomacy to overcome any challenges that may arise; I really am very fair and most people instinctively know I can be counted on to act with integrity. Because my Venus is in the 2nd house (sextile Saturn in the 4th), I’m also likely to want to provide practical support, while encouraging others to develop their natural talents and best qualities. Often, I’m able to put my finger on and then verbalize just what it is that makes someone feel unique and valuable or else I know what it is they truly need and try to help (trine 6th house Chiron in Aquarius). And as a Reiki practitioner, I’m able to help “balance” and unblock energy.

People seem to value my artistic abilities, and friends like hanging out at my home because it’s comfy-cozy and nicely decorated. Plus I know what they like and feed them well – lol! I give good fashion and decorating advice (when asked) and can even cut hair in a pinch. And I occasionally attract people wanting relationship and/or legal advice – when I was much younger, and before I learned how to establish boundaries, I was a lot like “Dear Abby”. I also used to “treat” others way more than I should have. I’m very generous and always pay at least my fair share, if not more.

With my Venus, Sun and North Node (plus Ceres) all in Libra, I enjoy being with people and understand the give and take required in order to maintain healthy relationships. I'm a great communicator (no kidding, ha?) and listener.

The biggest challenge is the one presented by my Aries South Node placed directly opposite Venus. When diplomacy fails and imbalances go on for too long, my natural inclination is to want to “fight” it out. Assertiveness is good, pointless arguing and the resulting hostility not so much. At least I’m self-aware (8th house Aries South Node) so I’m working on it.

    Hi LB,

Thank you for sharing about your Venus experience – nicely put! Seems like you're able to express the Sun-Venus energy quite well, and people appreciate you for it.

  3. Hieronimuss says:

My Venus is in the sixth in Scorpio and my work place was crucial for all major life events, such as findning my partner and establishing family. Now I teach, and all the water element quaslities – compassion, caring, nurturing, empathy – are a substational part of my work. Very insightful article, thanks!

  4. Aditya Singh says:

I am a Cancerian and feeling all the adjectives such as Compassion, Caring, Nurturing, Empathy etc., very much. It would be great if you can explain my relationship horoscope more deeply….?

  5. Hiroki Niizato says:

Aditya: That's a short question for a long answer :) Please check out other posts in this blog for more relationship insights.

  8. Suppose Venus is the ruler of second and seventh and placed at ninth cusp and this venus is UNASPECTED how it will be interpreted

    • Unaspected planets tend to carry special tension and focus within the psyche – I think I’ll create a new post on this topic soon. One question to explore this measurement is to see if philosophical or spiritual pursuit (9th) somehow overcompensates for self-worth and relationship anxiety (2nd and 7th).

  9. Vinicius says:

My Venus is fine. But the aspected planets are not so well.

It conjoins my sun, which is opposed to mars in gemini, also it is trigonning my jupiter in leo, which is the focus in a t-square among, pluto and moon (sco-tau).

It’s hard, sometimes, because I feel myself so deeply shallow, and so shallowy deep. Never both at the same time, but, one is always active.
Venus squares my ascendant, all I can say about it all is that I don’t know what I am doing most of the times. But I can certainly say that I am forever burning people with my affections for/about them.
