After reading the “hidden anger” post below, someone asked how one could heal from this. I’m sure there are many modalities that can help, but it is usually not a quick process, mainly due to our habit of not dealing with these emotions.
Regarding anger, once you know that you have hidden anger that you have a hard time getting in touch with, they there are a couple of things you can do:
1) Assume it’s there. Pay attention to it (Thich Nhat Hanh says we need to tend to it like a baby.) The worst place is not being in touch with it, because then it most likely will infect your relationships (e.g. you feel judgmental toward others, or your partner starts displaying “anger problems” that refuses to go away.)
2) Once you are in touch with it, just keep being with it as you go through your day. It’s okay to feel happy and affectionate while you still feel this anger within you – the mistake is to think that it has “disappeared” just because you feel a positive emotion – then you’re back to repressing it again.
3) Once you can do this, then keep working with your anger, with whatever healing modalities that you feel an affinity to – go to a good therapist or an alternative health consultant that does emotional healing work.
4) Gradually, the power that the anger has will start flowing into you, in the form of positive emotions, such as courage, independence and the ability to cut away destructive habits and relationships.
We’re talking about the Mars archetype here, but we can do this with other planetary energy as well, such as Moon, Venus, or Jupiter. Any of these energies can be suppressed through early life trauma (Saturn or Neptune could act to suppress the inner planets through hard aspects. Venus or Jupiter retrograde could add one extra step that’s required to access these energies.)
If Jupiter is suppressed, then cynicism and worry could run the psyche. One could access the emotions of faith and hope that he once had as a child, and keep holding onto it throughout the day. This is why religion or spirituality works for so many people, as well as gratitude. As we keep practicing to hold on to the store of positive emotions, their energy will start to flow into our personality, as an empowering second nature.
If Venus is suppressed, then one may feel goofy or unattractive in front of the opposite sex. Then we need to access the emotions where we felt that we were lovable and attractive, and keep being in touch with that emotion until that energy starts to flow into us. For many women, it’s possible that wearing make ups and dressing up serve not only as a physical maneuver, but a psychological ritual that help them access the feeling of being beautiful and attractive*.
As astrologers, part of our work is the restoration of the psychic wholeness of our client. This is sometimes called “Shadow work”, as per Jung’s writing. Natal chart is remarkable in how it can capture the dynamic (why and how) of the repression – it is a map that tells us how we lost our whole psyche, and a guide that tells us how we may reclaim it.
*As an aside, I read in a biography of Marilyn Monroe that she was pretty ordinary when being by herself, but was able to become “her” the moment she went in front of her fans – so make-up or no, she was able to turn on this Venusian energy at will.
